ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A central figure in a fake audit scandal that has embroiled the New Mexico Finance Authority has left the agency.

Interim Chief Executive John Gasparich confirmed to the Albuquerque Journal that Chief Operating Officer John Duff formally left on Sept. 28.

Duff had been on unpaid leave and Gasparich declined to say whether he resigned or was fired.

An investigation by KOB's 4 On Your Side team helped bring the fake audit to light.

The audit scandal's fallout has caused the finance authority to delay loans to cities and postpone a $40 million bond sale.

The agency makes loans to local agencies for infrastructure projects using bond money.

Former Controller Greg Campbell has admitted to falsifying the audit but said the finance statements are correct.

Campbell was indicted last month on 12 felony counts, but a grand jury declined to indict Duff.
