Officers will go door-to-door this Halloween, making sure registered sex offenders are complying with the law.

This is something the Department of Corrections does every year. Supervisor Patrick Jennings said in their database there are currently about 200 registered sex offenders on supervision in our community. "One of the unintended consequences of holidays such as Halloween, where kids are out in the community, it does pose a greater risk," Jennings said.

If you see officers out on Halloween night, walking up to decorated houses along with trick-or-treaters, it's no costume. One by one, they're looking up registered sex offenders and will be going door-to-door to make sure they're 100 percent in compliance with the law.

"No costumes, they can't hand out candy, they have a 6:00 curfew and the lights on their porch can't be on," Jennings said.

And, they can't have any of these scary or alluring Halloween decorations outside either. "If we go to someone's residence and we find any Halloween decorations or their lights on, or if they're handing out candy, they will be taken into custody," Jennings said.

Jennings said it's happened before, but this annual operation helps reduce the chance of any offenders.

"In the past, we have found some violations, but nowadays we haven't seen as many the last Halloween or two," Jennings said.

Jennings said he's talking about people who have committed an offense and are currently being monitored and who report to a probation officer.
