Chaparral prescribed burn begins

The Santa Fe National Forest Cuba Ranger District began the Chaparral prescribed burn Monday morning, two miles south of the Rancho del Chaparral Girl Scout Camp.
Over 1,300 acres are planned on being treating over a three-day period, conditions permitting. Smoke will be visible from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Gillman, Jemez Pueblo, Jemez Springs and Cuba.
Smoke from prescribed fires can be a nuisance to some, as well as a health concern. U.S. Forest Service officials said to reduce exposure to smoke, stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows, doors and vents closed. Residents living in low-lying may be most affected by the smoke.
