KOB Eyewitness News 4 has a long-standing commitment to covering politics in New Mexico.
That is why, as part of our Decision 2012 Election Coverage, we are giving each candidate in some of the big federal races two minutes of free airtime to explain who they are, and why you should vote for them.
Monday night, we have Democratic Third Congressional District candidate Ben Ray Lujan.
Hi, I’m Ben Ray Lujan.
It’s an honor to serve you, the people of New Mexico. To travel thousands of miles across this great state, to visit with the hard-working people, who love New Mexico, care about their communities and want to see the best for their families.
I grew up on a small farm here in New Mexico; learning from my parents and grandparents the value of hard work, to care for our family and neighbors, and look out for one another.
It’s those values and roots that drive me every day to stand up for New Mexico; fight for working families, people all across this great state. And, to make sure that I understand where I come from and not to forget where I was raised.
As we look across New Mexico, it’s an honor when people take time to visit with me, share their personal stories. I’m always so humbled.
But, in the face of many struggles that people across New Mexico are facing, some have suggested that social security and Medicare should be privatized; that Pell grants and Pre-K programs should be or eliminated – all while protecting tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. Those are not New Mexico values.
We need to make sure that we strengthen and support Medicare and Social Security. That we ensure that Pre-K programs and Pell Grants are going to be there for students to take advantage of, and that we’re good stewards of our resources, especially our water.
Those are the values that I grew up with; those are the values that I hear across New Mexico when I visit with people.
I’m Ben Ray Lujan. I humbly ask for your vote and your support on November 6.
