Prescribed fire prompts Albuquerque smoke alert

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Smoke from a prescribed fire in the Santa Fe National Forest has prompted health officials in Albuquerque to issue a smoke alert.
The smoke drifted south into the Middle Rio Grande Valley on Monday evening, and officials advised residents to keep their windows and doors closed and limit their time outdoors.
The Cuba Ranger District began a prescribed burn Monday morning south of the Rancho del Chaparral Girl Scout Camp.
The project aims to treat more than 1,300 acres over a three-day period.
Forest officials say smoke will be visible from the Jemez Springs area west to Cuba and south to Rio Rancho and Albuquerque over the next few days.
The smoke is expected to settle into lower elevations during the evening, but officials say it should lift by midmorning.
