LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The speed limit is increasing to 75 mph on a nearly 14-mile stretch of Interstate 10 south of Las Cruces.

New Mexico highway officials say the speed limit is bumping up from 70 mph for both directions of traffic between the Mesquite exit and the Texas state line.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that signs began being switched out Monday and the process should be completed by Wednesday.

State officials say they made the decision following a study that focused on improvements to the interstate in recent years.

Two new driving lanes were finished late last year. Other improvements are drainage upgrades and the installation of a cable vehicle barrier in the median of the interstate to reduce head-on collisions.
