Units from the New Mexico National Guard, the Las Cruces Fire Department and the Dona Ana County Fire Department were on the scene Tuesday trying to determine what caused some in the area to complain of sore eyes and throats.

"It was a real simple irritant, a burn like chile, almost. Just a little bit in your eyes and a little bit in your throat," Tony Mobley, a plant manager inside a Santa Teresa industrial complex said.

Mobley said that on Tuesday morning, his employees began to complain of the irritation, and when employees at a neighboring plant had the same complaints it was decided to shut everything down and evacuate.

Employees were examined at nearby Santa Teresa High School and were eventually released.
