Santa Fe Police released new details Wednesday about the murder of a 75-year-old man that has floored the community.

Police released the statement of probable cause, which states Jeannie Sandoval and her boyfriend Anthony Yepez choked George Ortiz to death then poured cooking oil on his body and set it on fire. Sandoval is identified as Ortiz’s stepdaughter and lived in the house with him.

The documents state Ortiz was in an argument with Yepez and Sandoval. At one point, the document reads, Ortiz struck Sandoval in the throat and Yepez in the chest. That’s when Yepez jumped on top of Ortiz and choked him, according to the document. The document states the two wanted to destroy the evidence, so they doused Ortiz’s body with cooking oil and set it on fire.

"In my twenty years as a law enforcement officer, I've never seen a person in the condition that was present in that scene," said Capt. Aric Wheeler of the Santa Fe Police Department.

Wheeler said Ortiz’s body burned slowly to the point it was not recognizable.

Both Sandoval and Yepez were caught in Ortiz’s vehicle in Espanola Tuesday afternoon. They both remain in the Santa Fe County Jail on a $1 million dollar bond hold each.
