Texas lawyer arrested on NM warrant in civil case

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Texas lawyer has been arrested on a New Mexico warrant for failing to appear in court and pay a half-million dollar bond a judge imposed after ruling the lawyer owned more than $2 million in fines and damages in a civil case.
New Mexico attorney General Gary King's office says El Paso lawyer Michael J. Gopin was arrested Tuesday after a private jet he was on arrived in El Paso from Mexico. He was still jailed late Thursday pending extradition to New Mexico.
The Albuquerque Journal reports the warrant requires Gopin to post a $1 million cash-only bond if he wants to be released once he arrives in New Mexico.
Gopin's legal troubles stem from civil actions filed in 2007 by former clients who said he misled them.
