Las Vegas spending $1.1 million on water meters

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) - Las Vegas plans to spend about $1.1 million in grant and loan money to upgrade existing water meters so that they no longer need to be read manually.
City Utilities Director Ken Garcia says about $825,000 is coming from a grant and the remaining $275,000 from a state clean water loan fund.
The Las Vegas Optic reports city will only need one meter-reader once the new devices are installed.
That worker will drive around and equipment will read signals and record usage.
Currently three readers and a supervisor are dedicated to the task.
Garcia says the other employees will be reassigned to other tasks like fixing water lines.
