Albuquerque police have launched an animal cruelty investigation after a dog was brutally attacked.

Investigators said a neighbor reported seeing the dog's owner hitting her several times with a metal folding chair.

The incident occurred at a home near Unser and Dennis Chavez Boulevard.

When police confronted the dog's owner, he told them he only hit her once to discipline her for urinating on the carpet.

The dog's owner later admitted he was trying to kill the 11-month-old dog.

The city has taken custody of the dog, named Honey, while the investigation continues.
