Albuquerque group to appeal NM nuke waste OK

CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - An environmental group says it will ask an appeals court to overturn a state decision allowing nuclear waste that requires special handling and containers to be stored at a federal facility near Carlsbad.
The Albuquerque-based Southwest Research and Information Center said Friday it wants the state to hold public hearings on permit changes approved on Nov. 1 for the Energy Department facility.
The permit lets the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant receive and store so-called "hot" remote-handled transuranic nuclear waste in shielded containers.
The group says the New Mexico Environmental Department rejected a similar permit last year.
Dan Hancock of Southwest Research says the state ignored comments from 200 people worried about the waste.
He says his group is worried inferior containers are being used to handle "hot" nuclear waste.
