Local workers react to Hostess mediation talks

Last week it appeared that the Twinkie was dead. Hostess Brands said it would close its doors and sell its assets in bankruptcy court. The company blamed a strike. But now there may be some life for the company.
Monday, Hostess and the union agreed to private mediation. But the move apparently is too late for a number of workers in Albuquerque who are connected to an Albuquerque distribution company that sells Hostess products.
Driver Lee Schaeffer was told Friday he no longer had a job after Hostess supplies stopped being shipped to the Hostess Cakes Wonder Bread Outlet on Osuna. "I have a lot of years in the grocery business. I'll go out there and stick my application in there and hopefully someone will pick up the phone and call me, I hope," Schaeffer told KOB Eyewitness News 4 at the store.
The outlet store is just part of a family owned business that operates the distribution company. We are told that of the 27 people on the payroll, only three still have jobs. Officials said even if mediation is successful, the company may still go out of business because stores they have accounts with that buy buns and bread have moved on to other suppliers.
