Carnuel residents hope for clean drinking water

There is a renewed hope for people living in the East Mountain town of Carnuel. For decades they have not been able to drink their polluted water. Bernalillo County Commissioners plan to make funding the water project a top priority.
Bernalillo County Commissioners will meet Tuesday night to finalize their priority list for what they want funded from the federal government. The County hopes they can get nearly $3 million from federal agencies to put toward the massive project. The total cost of the project is $20 million to ensure every Carnuel resident has clean drinking water and an additional $16 million to create a sewer system to dispose of waste water.
"Over the last couple of years we've been trying to get funding to start the next couple of phases," said Frank Roth of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority.
The water became polluted over time when septic tanks cracked and human waste and other contaminates mixed with the water supply.
