An elderly man robbed a bank in Carlsbad Thursday, telling the teller that he needed the money to pay for his wife's surgery.

Police said the man entered the Western Commerce Bank located at 127 S. Canyon at approximately 10:40 a.m. and handed a note to a teller. The note indicated that that he was armed and was demanding money.

The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money, but at one point the man told the teller to stop because he only needed enough for his wife's surgery. The man then fled the bank and headed on foot in a southbound direction.
