On Thursday, several media reports cited sources saying seven non-FBS schools in the Big East agreed to leave the conference. DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova will reportedly leave the conference. UNM men's basketball coach Steve Alford was asked about the departure of the Big East basketball schools.
"I don't know why they didn't do this a year ago," said Alford. "If you have no football, why would you continue to mess with the football element," questioned Alford. "If I don't have football, it only makes sense to get in a big time basketball league, pitch that to all the tv's and they're going to end up getting a great tv deal and I think be a phenominal basketball league."
The announcement could mean another conference shift, like a return to the Mountain West for Boise State and San Diego State. So would Alford welcome back the Broncos and the Aztecs?
"I'm going to see 'em twice this year. They're probably not going to welcome us when we come there and I hope we're not real welcoming we they come here," said the UNM head coach.
Alford's primary concern with the MWC is not it's membership, but rather television exposure.
"I hope we're proactive, not reactive when it comes to a tv deal. That's the biggest key right now, not who's in our league right now. Who's in our league status quo is good enough for a very nice tv package. I just hope the powers that be are spending more time on a tv deal that's going to bring revenue and national attention for the schools that are going to be in our league versus is it time to welcome back people that just left our league."
