NM moves forward with Silver City mine plan

SILVER CITY, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico is moving forward with a plan to safeguard abandoned mines in Silver City.
Officials with the state's Abandoned Mine Land Program say they have hired a team of planners, landscape architects, biologists and engineers to assess the conditions of Silver City's Boston Hill area.
Options would include netting over open shafts and closures at mine openings to protect wildlife. The team will also be looking at how best to preserve the historic resources.
The team says public comments will be considered before any formal plans are announced.
The Abandoned Mine Land Program has closed more than 4,000 hazardous mine openings over the past two decades and reclaimed numerous mine waste piles.
Officials estimate there are more than 15,000 mine hazards scattered throughout New Mexico that remain un-reclaimed.
