Southwest Albuquerque New Year's Eve gunfire

Gunfire rocked the Westgate Heights neighborhood on New Year's Eve.
Resident Alex Herrera pulled out his video camera and shot the loud pops of bullets shortly after midnight. "I'm always afraid a bullet will come through the roof and hit someone around here," Herrera told KOB Eyewitness News 4 at his home Tuesday.
Herrera said people started firing guns about 10 minutes before midnight. He said the barrage lasted at least 20 minutes.
"It seems like it increases every year. People seem to not get the message. And they think that owning a firearm doesn't come with responsibility," Herrera said.
In the past, Herrera has placed plywood sheets on his roof on New Year's Eve to prevent a bullet from injuring someone in his home. He didn't do that this year, but he told KOB he made his wife and grandson sleep in the bottom bunk of a bunk bed to protect them from a possible stray bullet.
