Boise State recently announced their intent to remain in the Mountain West Conference. Now the big question is will San Diego State pass up their trip to the Big East do the same.
The latest agreement between Boise State and the Mountain West includes a clause that reads "The MWC will extend an option for San Diego State University to join the MWC on terms mutually agreed between SDSU and the MWC and to join or decline before offering membership to any other institution. This right of first option to San Diego State shall expire on January 31, 2013."
Translation: SDSU has until the end of the month to decide if they want to stay in the MWC or the league can start offering their spot at the table to other schools.
Others schools reportedly in the mix include Houston, SMU, UTEP and (wait for it.....) BYU.
UNM Vice President for Athletics Paul Krebs said in an interview with 610am on Wednesday that "if the league can get to 12 schools for this coming season then we should do that." Krebs added, "I think it's beneficial for the Lobos to have a conference opponent in the state of Texas."
Another interesting provision of the Boise State-MWC agreement is a national exposure bonus system. If a conference member plays in a regular season game on a national broadcast such as ESPN, ESPN2, ABC network "Over the Air", NBC network "Over the Air" or CBS network "Over the Air", then that school will receive a bonus of $300,000 from the MWC. The conference will provide an additional $200,000 if that game is on a Saturday.
