Group wants ignition interlock rules expanded

Some convicted drunk drivers may be required to have devices in their homes to detect whether they have been drinking.
Advocacy group Impact DWI wants to expand the state's ignition interlock requirements. They plan on pushing New Mexico lawmakers on the issue when the legislature convenes later this month.
The home devices would be for offenders who claim they don't have a vehicle and are not driving. Dr. Richard Roth with Impact DWI said offenders without interlocks are four times more likely to be arrested again for DWI. But he said the home device still allows them to drink safely and in moderation.
"You could blow an alcohol-free breath in the morning, go to work all day, come home at 6:00 and have three or four drinks and you'd be fine to blow into it alcohol free the next morning," Dr. Roth said.
The bill doesn't have a sponsor yet, but Dr. Roth said Representative Ken Martinez has authorized the bill to be drafted. Dr. Roth also said the federal government is now offering grants to states who enforce all offender interlock laws.
