LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A corrections officer at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility will be honored with a medal of valor for his off-duty actions.

The state Corrections Department says Sgt. Mitchell Lamb will receive the medal during a ceremony on Monday.

It's the department's second highest honor.

The department says that on Dec. 21, Lamb rushed to a neighbor's home where a toddler was accidentally hit by the family car.

The toddler was seriously injured and Lamb was able to stabilize the boy until paramedics arrived.

Officials say the boy is recovering.

Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel and Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility Warden Steve Nance will be among the officials on hand for the medal ceremony.
