Former NM corrections officer sentenced to prison

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A former New Mexico corrections officer accused of assaulting a DUI suspect has been sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison.
Federal authorities say 40-year-old Demetrio Juan Gonzales was sentenced Tuesday to a 33-month prison term followed by three years of supervised release.
Gonzales was accused of striking and choking a DUI suspect at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque on Dec. 21, 2011.
He pleaded guilty last October to one count of violating the civil rights of an individual.
Authorities say Gonzales was assigned to an MDC unit where people are brought to be booked soon after they're arrested. His job was to photograph and fingerprint the suspects.
Prosecutors say Gonzales assaulted a man who was verbally uncooperative during the booking process.
