Retired teacher takes over House education panel

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A retired Albuquerque educator and a longtime labor union activist are taking over the leadership of the House Education Committee, which will handle school improvement proposals advocated by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.
House Speaker W. Ken Martinez announced committee assignments Wednesday.
Rep. Mimi Stewart, an Albuquerque Democrat and retired teacher, becomes Education Committee chairwoman. She succeeds Rick Miera, who became majority leader.
The vice chairwoman is freshman Rep. Christine Trujillo, an Albuquerque educator who was an outspoken critic of Martinez policies as state president of the American Federation of Teachers. She succeeds Rhonda King, who didn't seek re-election last year.
Senate committee assignments haven't been announced but leadership of the Senate Education Committee is up for grabs. Former chairwoman Cynthia Nava of Las Cruces didn't seek re-election.
