Gov. unveils Class of 2012 high school graduation rate

Gov. Susana Martinez unveiled Thursday the latest graduation rate for the Class of 2012.
Martinez announced the statewide graduation rate for the class of 2012 was 70.3 percent, an increase of 7.3 points from last year’s graduation rate.
The graduation rate for New Mexico’s Hispanic students increased rate from 59.3 percent to 67.7 percent, The rate for American Indian students increased from 60.1 percent to 69.3 percent and the graduation rate for students with special needs improved from 47 percent to 55.7 percent, however, the largest graduation rate improvement belongs to the state’s English Language Learners, increasing from 55.9 percent to 65.6 percent.
While New Mexico has more progress to make in improving the state’s graduation rate, Martinez applauded the increase.
The National Center for Education Statistics estimated the graduation rate for high school students nationwise was 78 percent, based on state-by-state data for the Class of 2010.
She also urged the passage of proposed legislation she previously outlined during her State of the State address. The proposed measure would create a dropout warning system in order to flag struggling students early on and engage parents and teachers in getting these students the help they need.
