LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Town trustees in Mesilla are considering whether to create an online payment system for its more than 1,000 utility customers.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that if town officials approve the proposal, it would mark the first time customers in Mesilla would be able to pay their utility bills on the Internet.

The proposal to be considered by trustees on Tuesday is an agreement with a Texas company that would create an online payment system for monthly water, sewer and solid waste bills.

Town Clerk Nicholas Eckert says the company would charge the town an annual fee and that at some point the town might consider passing along that cost to customers.
