House OKs bill changing Metro Court qualifications

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A proposal to expand qualifications for judges on the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court has won approval in the House.
The bill will require anyone elected or appointed as a Metro Court judge to have practiced law for at least five years. The current requirement is three years.
Under the measure, Metro Court judges also must reside in New Mexico for at least three years before taking office. There is no residency requirement currently.
The bill passed the House unanimously on Monday and goes to the Senate for consideration. The 19-member Metro Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases and some civil lawsuits.
