New problems at Workforce Solutions

While the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions says unemployed New Mexicans who haven’t been able to get through on the new online claim system should just keep trying, NMDWS is making an exception for employers who use the site to pay taxes.
Time is ticking for New Mexico employers who haven’t filed wage report and tax payments, but just like many unemployed people, they’re having trouble too.
Robert Ptacek, owner of UCC Search Inc. in Santa Fe, has tried to keep up with the changing times in the 28 years he’s been in business.
But the state’s new online unemployment claim system has kept employers like Ptacek from paying their unemployment insurance taxes which are due January 31st.
"At the first of the month I started calling the number I had and it was always busy," said Ptacek. "So it becomes a problem. You're trying to meet deadlines and you're not getting anywhere."
Ptacek faced about a $40 fine if he didn’t pay his $5.20 tax bill on time. But there’s some good news.
The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solution says it's waiving fees, penalties and interest “due to the extraordinarily high volume of calls.”
"We are waiving these penalties and interest on a case-by-case basis to make sure that no employer is penalized for something beyond their control," said Celina Bussey, Secretary of NMDWS.
Agents will verify, on a case-by-case basis, that employers tried unsuccessfully to get through to pay their tax bill.
Luckily, Ptacek got through on Wednesday. He has this advice for NMDWS.
"I think the state, when they put a computer system in run the old one along with the new one until they get the problems worked out," he said.
The state says 18,000 employers have already submitted their quarter contributions. The state reminds employers they have to activate your account before you can access the new system.
