It appears more people are buying lottery tickets in New Mexico.

State lottery officials said sales between July and the end of December increased 11 percent.

That's an increase of $7 million when compared to the same time last year.

Players also won more money; Over the past six months New Mexicans won more than $31 million.

The increase in sales is going to help the state's ailing lottery scholarship program.

During fiscal year 2012, the state lottery gave $41.3 million to the program – the second highest return.

The lottery is required by law to give at least 30 percent of its revenue to the scholarship program every month.
