Snow storm a welcome sight in Durango

There's no doubt about it, the people of Durango are loving the snow.

"I like having a lot of snow in town, I went skiing, or snow boarding Monday and Tuesday and it was fantastic," said Suzanne Schieltz

Fantastic because the most recent snow storm hit the mountains hard.

There was so much snow at one point an avalanche shut down part of US-550 north of Durango.

And it's much needed moisture after last year's destructive fire season.

"I'm really enjoying the snow in the mountains this winter I'm learning to ski this winter so it's been nice to have some good powder days," Martin Johnson said.

The snow was a good start, but the area's going to need even more to make a dent in the drought.

"The roughly 1.47 inches of snow we got was a good start, but we need to have more precipitation this winter to get us up to normal and reduce the potential of fire threat this next year," said Butch Knowlton, La Plata County emergency manager.

And hopefully the snow keeps coming down.
