A New Mexico legislator says he wants the state to ban assault weapons.

Representative Stephen Easley, a Democrat from Santa Fe, said he's filed House Bill 402 to “carefully define assault weapons and large-scale magazines and forbid their trade, sale or purchase in New Mexico.”

You can read his entire bill here.

In a news release, Easley said he filed the bill in response to the recent gun-related tragedies across the nation.

Easley said he hopes his bill will “prevent the type of mass-murder made all too easy by these weapons, while still respecting the time-honored right of New Mexicans to own firearms.”

According to the release, the bill would:

• Define assault weapons carefully, excluding non-semiautomatic weapons from restriction.

• Safeguard firearm ownership and attempt to eliminate accidental firearm deaths in the home and elsewhere by requiring that weapons be kept in a securely-locked gun safe.

• Safeguard the transit of assault weapons by requiring that weapons must be unloaded, magazines must be detached from the gun and a trigger lock must be engaged.

• Allow gun owners who legally acquired their assault weapons prior to July 1, 2013 to have their guns grandfathered in by this law.

• Give recreational users of assault weapons the opportunity to fire these weapons safely, as registered gun dealers may offer their use at a registered gun ranges.
