The Second Judicial District Attorney's office held a press conference Thursday to say it'll be cracking down on violent crimes committed with guns.

"In Bernalillo County if they choose to commit a crime with a firearm, they're gonna get our attention and our best efforts," District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said. "If we have something to say about it, they'll be doing time in prison where they need to be."

She broke down the numbers for gun-related crimes in New Mexico. In 2011 alone, 60 murders, 703 robberies and more than 1700 robberies involved the use of firearms.

Brandenburg said that one of the issues they're most focused on is making sure convicted felons in possession of firearms are punished properly. She said she or one of her chiefs will be addressing and reviewing all of those cases personally.

The DA's office is also supporting a house bill that would increase jail time for convicted felons with repeat felon in possession offenses.

"Be on notice," Brandenburg said. "If you choose to commit a crime, a felony, using a firearm, you're gonna get our attention. You're gonna get my attention."
