Sandia Peak has a disappointing season

This season, Sandia Peak opened a week late. Monday, the ski area is closed, about a month earlier than usual. The snowfall was a big disappointment this year. Sandia's owners and management don't think there's much chance it will turn around.
Management at Sandia Peak will keep equipment up and ready, just in case Mother Nature decides to cooperate but they're not counting on it.
Brian Coon is Operations Manager at Sandia Peak. He said it's been a long time since it's been this bad.
"This is a really poor year. Probably one of the worst in the last 7 or 8 years we've had," Coon said.
Unless they get a lot of snow, Monday will be it for this year's ski season.
Dan Knippel of Albuquerque is sad to see the season so short this year.
"A shame of that because this is so convenient up here. Here in the Albuquerque area- easy to get to. Normally really nice. It's a shame there isn't more snow," Knippel said.
Diego and Veronica Reyes made the short trip from Albuquerque. They heard the news about this being the last day. They had the slopes practically to themselves on this Presidents Day.
"Yes, this is fun. A little windy, but the sun is nice and the snows still pretty good. So, I wish they could stay open a few more weeks. But…"
With only 32 inches of snowfall this season. Sandia was only able to open one lift and one run - the beginners hill.
Coon said this year is far from normal. "Normally we'd be full board today with 2,000 people running around on President's. Today we've got about 15 or 20 people getting their last ski runs in."
