Teachers missing many school days

A study released by the U.S. Department of Education reveals New Mexico ranks high when it comes to teachers who chronically miss work.
The study looked at teachers who missed more than 10 days of work in a single school year. The study found teachers who work in charter schools and high-minority schools call in sick to work more often.
New Mexico ranked 5th behind only Oregon, Arkansas, Hawaii, and Rhode Island.
"I think one of the things we have failed to do when it comes to morale of teachers or where they are today when it comes to excitement being in our classrooms- we have failed to champion their success and their effectiveness,” said Hanna Skandera, New Mexico Public Education Secretary-Designate.
The study also found it’s likely the top five states may be spending more having to hire substitutes so often.
