When you hear Sahara, you think of the dry, desolate desert with nothing to eat or drink in sight.
That's exactly the opposite when it comes to this week's Best Bites.
The family-owned eatery on Central across from UNM, features food from Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon.
It's owned by the Khalil family, who came to Albuquerque from Jordan, by way of New York. They're serving up homemade food from their family recipes. Think very big combo plates featuring items like shish kabob, gyro, beef and lamb and chicken shawarmah.
Combo plates run about $10, catering to a UNM student's tight budget.
"As a matter of fact, we became so popular with the students they want us to open a branch inside the SUB and we did," says owner Haytham Khalil, about opening a Sahara location in UNM's Student Union Building.
It's no wonder budget-minded students love Sahara, since each combo plate comes with basmati rice, falafel, hummus, salad, stuffed grape leaves, and pita bread - plus your entree.
More like a few meals on one plate!
