Embattled Rio Grande High wrestler wins state title

Tensions ran high at the New Mexico State Wrestling Championships after a controversial Rio Grande High School wrestler was allowed to compete.
Albuquerque Public Schools suspended Nick Chavez last week for allegedly stealing money from another student and then slapping the student.
An official from Rio Grande claimed to have witnessed the whole thing. But a district judge ruled in Chavez's favor Friday before competing and lifted the suspension.
Chavez finished the season undefeated, dominating his opponent from Atrisco Heritage.
Neither Chavez nor his family would comment after his state championship victory, but Bernalillo County Commissioner Art De La Cruz offered his support for Chavez.
"I think it was unfair to Nick and I think it was unfair to the family. But the judge ruled appropriately,” De La Cruz said. “The young man had a chance. He prevailed today. And I think he will be vindicated in the end.”
An incident report is expected to be released sometime next week.
