Representatives from the National Education Association are in New Mexico to celebrate Read Across America week.

They will be bringing the "Cat-a-van" with Dr. Suess books and characters Thursday to Desert View Elementary and Ann Parrish Elementary in Los Lunas.

They're working with Delta Dental as well. Delta Dental will be stressing the importance of oral hygiene, and passing out toothbrushes and timers for brushing.

This comes as New Mexico struggles with how to bring up reading proficiency levels.

Lawmakers have been considering several bills that would affect the way third graders who aren't proficient in reading are promoted or retained.

Each of the schools will also receive a $1000 grant to go to their libraries.
