Gov. Susana Martinez’s choice to head the Public Education Department will get a confirmation hearing Friday, two years after being appointed to the job.

Hanna Skandera’s confirmation hearing will happen Friday before the Senate Rules Committee.

Skandera has been serving as acting secretary since Martinez appointed her in January of 2011.

In the past, other cabinet secretaries have served years without ever going before the Senate for confirmation.

Until now, a hearing on Skandera’s confirmation had never been scheduled.

Skandera must be approved by the committee and then the Senate to earn the official title of secretary.

If she is not confirmed, she would not be able to take the post or continue serving in the job.
