Former Lt. Gov. Diane Denish announced Friday morning to her Facebook followers that she will not jump into the Albuquerque mayoral race.

Denish follows Albuquerque City Councilor Ken Sanchez, who also said this week that he won’t seek the office.  With these popular Democrats out of the race, the road for incumbent Mayor Richard Berry is easier, according to political blogger Joe Monahan.  Monahan adds that many serious contenders have shied away from the mayoral race once they saw the high approval rating Berry has.

"Berry is running around a 70 percent approval rating in an insider poll that was conducted,” Monahan said.  “The Journal poll (released) a couple of months ago had him at about 68 percent."

Former Albuquerque Public Safety Director Pete Dinelli, retired Police Sergeant Paul Heh, and former Albuquerque First Lady Margaret Aragon de Chavez have stated they are making a run for the seat.
