Questions remain in Santa Fe police shooting

A Santa Fe Police Officer who shot a man may have fired at the caretaker of a residence thinking he was an intruder.
New Mexico State Police stated Monday an alarm went off at a home on the 500 block of Johnson Ln. around 3:15 a.m. When the Santa Fe Police officer arrived, he saw a man with a gun inside the residence and fired at him. But neighbors told KOB Eyewitness News4 the man shot was not intruder, he was the caretaker of the home.
The homeowners live in Santa Fe part time and while they are away, they hire a caretaker to watch over the home.
“The alarm went off, he heard the alarm and knew it was one of the houses he takes care of and decided to go in and investigate,” said Joe Nero.
NMSP has not confirmed the man shot is the caretaker, but several neighbors felt certain of the facts. Neighbors describe the caretaker as an older man who had earned the trust of those who live in the neighborhood.
“I know as him a very nice personable quiet guy. If he sees you he wants to stop and talk for a little while,” Nero said. “He takes care of 3 or 4 of the homes in the neighborhood.”
