SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) - A troubled New Mexico border city rocked by extortion and voter fraud scandals is hoping to get a port of entry.

KTSM-TV reports that Sunland Park city councilors approved this week a federal plan to build a new port of entry in the city's backyard.

The U.S. Department of State is developing plans to build the port of entry but federal officials wanted to make sure city officials were on board.

Former Sunland Park Councilor Daniel Salinas, who beat candidate Gerardo Hernandez last year in a mayoral race, was prevented from taking the mayoral office after he was charged with extortion by secretly Hernandez receiving a lap dance from a topless woman in his campaign office.

Others have been charged with voter fraud.
