GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - A dozen horses reportedly are starving and struggling in deep snow while roaming free in the Chuska Mountains on the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico.
The Gallup Independent reports that Navajo Nation natural resources rangers recently went to the area near Narbona Pass and were able to round up three of the horses.
But dispatcher Alyona Smith says the rest took off running. Smith says it's not certain whether the horses are wild or belong to somebody. She says somebody has been dropping hay for the horses from time to time.
Resident Lyle Curley of Toadlena reports that the horses are "skin and bones" and that he hasn't seen anybody feeding them.
