Open gov't groups: FDA redactions rules skirts law

WASHINGTON (AP) - Open government advocates are pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to drop a longtime policy that they say is used to withhold details about drugs, medical implants and other products from the public.
A coalition of groups is asking the FDA to overturn the policy used to black out sections of federal documents before turning them over to journalists, investigators and others who request information from the government.
In a letter to the agency, OpenTheGovernment.org says that the FDA is violating freedom of information laws. They say the tactic also undermines the Obama administration's goal of making government more accountable.
The FDA says it is still reviewing a formal request to overturn the policy.
