Lawsuit targets Sandoval County voting mess

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) - Former Sandoval County Clerk Sally Padilla and Bureau of Elections Chief Eddie Gutierrez are the targets of a federal lawsuit that alleges voters in one city were deprived of their right vote.
The lawsuit, filed this week, contends that the county had too few voting centers in Republican-leaning Rio Rancho.
That, the suit says, led three Republican candidates to lose to Democrats.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the legal challenge seeks new elections in races involving legislative candidate David Doyle, county clerk hopeful Paula Papponi and judicial candidate Lawrence McCain.
The clerk's office had consolidated precincts into five voting convenience centers for the November general election.
Critics say the move by Padilla, a Democrat, resulted in long lines and waiting times of more than five hours on Election Day.
