An Albuquerque 6-year-old stopped his grandma from trying to drive drunk, according to court documents.

A person called Albuquerque police to say Helen Speer appeared intoxicated in the driver’s seat of her car while her three grandkids sat in the backseat at a westside gas station.

When police met up with Speer at the Giant gas station on Golf Course Road and Paradise Boulevard she told officers she didn’t know why her grandson took away her car keys, according to the criminal complaint.

Police said Speer had slurred speech, the smell of alcohol on her breathe and a revoked driver’s license from a previous DWI.

The registration on her car’s vehicle had also expired in October 2012.

Speer appeared in court Sunday and was charged with three counts of child abuse.

A judge set her bond at $20,000 cash surety.
