A middle school student in Rio Rancho said he stood up to a bully, only to get beat up then suspended from school.
Now his father is taking action against what he considers bullying at his son’s school.
Richard McClurg attended Eagle Ridge Middle School for about two months.
McClurg, a 7th grader, says he told an 8th grade boy to leave a girl alone.
But he says the older boy then turned on him.
McClurg says the older boy and three other friends beat him up as he was trying to walk to his school bus Wednesday afternoon.
Brian McClurg, Richard’s father, claims the fight stopped only after other kids pulled the boys off his son.
McClurg was suspended for fighting until Tuesday. He says the other boy was also suspended.
Brian McClurg is questioning the school’s response to the situation.
McClurg claims several students, some teachers and at least one security employee witnessed the fight and did nothing.
Rio Rancho School District officials said they are investigating the fight, but cannot give details citing federal laws.
The district said they take these type of incidents seriously, but the altercation isn’t necessarily a case of bullying.
The district says bullying would be a repeated pattern, not an incident that happens once.
