ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Bernalillo County authorities say a Metropolitan Detention Center inmate has died five days after what's being called a suicide attempt.

County officials say 26-year-old Eric J. Martinez died Sunday at University of New Mexico Hospital.

He had been hospitalized since Tuesday when corrections officers found him unresponsive during routine checks.

Martinez was booked into the jail on Dec. 19 for probation violation, possession of a controlled substance and resisting or obstructing an officer.

Chief of Corrections Ramon Rustin says the detention center will review its training, policies and procedures regarding suicide prevention.
