APD officer details day he shot Iraq vet outside 7-11

The wrongful death trial against APD in the shooting death of Kenneth Ellis began Tuesday as city attorney Kathy Levy spent about an hour building up Detective Brett Lampiris-Tremba's image.
She minimized his mistakes by asking questions about how young he was when he smoked marijuana, committed an act of vandalism and got into several car accidents.
Then, she asked him questions about his successes as an officer, including a nomination for Detective of the Month.
Then testimony turned to the day he shot Ellis.
He demonstrated how Ellis walked around with a gun to his head and a phone in his other hand, and explained he felt it was a hot scene and the community was in danger. He said he shot one round, instead of the customary two.
"I didn't fire again because I saw what was one of the most horrible things I've seen in my life," Lampiris-Tremba said. "He was having a hard time after I fired my round at him, and it did stop his actions, unless you want me to, I'd rather not describe that."
Lampiris-Tremba said after that he was "in shock" and "useless" and could not walk to Ellis' body.
The morning became about demonstrating how Lampiris-Tremba felt shooting Ellis was a safety necessity.
Lampiris-Tremba is not on trial.
In the end, the city will be expected to pay damages for its role in the shooting.
