New Mexicans are celebrating the election of the first Latin American pope. The historic moment was celebrated with a Mass of Thanks at San Felipe de Neri church in Old Town Wednesday.

From the moment the white smoke appeared, Albuquerque rejoiced. Father Dennis Garcia even broke a sweat running to alert his congregation.

“We’re pretty excited. We’re ready for this day. Didn’t think it was going to happen so fast,” Garcia said.

Albuquerque residents and tourists alike descended onto historic san Felipe de Neri church in Old Town Plaza.Including Valerie Quintana. “”he must be nervous!” Quintana said, laughing. She’s grateful for Pope Francis, and her phone.

“It's really exciting. I’m grateful for the technology to watch it my smartphone today and I had to come to the church to be a part of it," Quintana said.

Father Dennis Garcia said he would ask the congregation to give thanks and to pray for Pope Francis. "The Pope is our pastor. He's Papa in every sense of the word. He is father, he is grandfather, he is our spirtitual father,” Garcia said.
