ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The president of the Albuquerque City Council says it's time for a change at the top of the Albuquerque Police Department.

Council President Dan Lewis says the department's reputation has been tarnished by controversy, including a federal investigation into excessive force allegations.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, Chief Ray Schultz responds by saying that he's proud of the work done by men and women in uniform and that he will continue to work hard for city residents.

Albuquerque's chief is hired and fired by the mayor.

Then-Mayor Martin Chavez appointed Schultz chief in 2006. Current Mayor Richard Berry has kept Schultz as chief.
