ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Albuquerque Police Department is drawing a measure of support from Mayor Richard Berry's office at a time when a couple of City Council members say they want a new chief.
Berry's office says in a statement issued on behalf of the office that the mayor will analyze things going forward. But the statement says the department is making progress and it cites lower rates in crime and in officer-involved shootings.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that Berry's office released the statement a day after Council President Dan Lewis and Councilor Isaac Benton said they want a different chief than Ray Schultz.
Lewis said the department's reputation has been tarnished by controversies that include a federal investigation into alleged excessive use of force by officers.
